Bulletins & Updates
Athletics WiFi Migration Completion – January 31, 2026
What is happening?
The wireless network called “Athletics” is being retired on January 31st, 2026. The “Athletics Staff” wireless network will take its place.
Why is this happening?
Wireless networks that rely on username and password combinations are no longer considered to be the most secure method to use to connect. The “Athletics” network is being replaced with the “Athletics Staff” network where computer certificates manage the Wifi connections without the need for a username or password.
Does this affect me? What do I have to do to prepare?
The “Athletics Staff” wireless network was created in May 2025, and most computers have already been migrated to use this network. This only affects PCs & Macs that have wireless connectivity, which includes mostly laptops, although a few desktops may use Wifi as well. If you are using a device that is not ICA-issued, this can be ignored.
If you are using Windows, no actions should be needed. Your machine should already be connecting to Athletics Staff.
If you are using Windows & it is still connecting to the “Athletics” network, IT will need to see the machine & configure it to use the “Athletics Staff” network.
If you are using a Mac and are already connected to Athletics Staff, then no action is needed.
If your Mac is still connecting to the “Athletics” network, Athletics IT will need to configure the machine to use the “Athletics Staff” network manually.
IMPORTANT: If your machine is not yet using the “Athletics Staff” network as stated above, Athletics IT will need to configure the machine to do so. This can only be done while on campus. Please arrange to make an appointment to either come to the IT Office in the BJC or for us to visit your work area by submitting a help desk ticket.
Notes:
The “Athletics Staff” network allows your machine to connect to the departmental shared drives, the video server, printers, and certain other Athletics resources. If your machine is not configured by the deadline, wireless connectivity to these resources will not function.
Cell phones and iPads will not be allowed to connect to the “Athletics Staff” network unless an exception is required. Mobile devices can use their cell service or one of the guest networks for connectivity (“ICA Guest”, “PSU Guest”, “PSU Fan” etc.)
Windows 10 to Windows 11 Upgrades Ongoing
What is happening?
Penn State IT Security is requiring all eligible PCs be upgraded to Windows 11 by the end of year. Most PCs that are eligible for the upgrade have been upgraded. Those machines that cannot upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware limitations will have their PCs replaced soon. We will be contacting departments as hardware becomes available.
Why is this happening?
Windows 10 will reach the end of support this fall. At this point software and security updates or fixes will no longer be provided.
